The project intervenes on an existing building inaugurated in 1928 along with the rest of the railway buildings and facilities that make up the Canfranc International Station complex. The building known as “Cocheras francesas” is a single-storey building, rectangular in shape and with a built area of 377.28 m².
The most unique feature of the existing construction is its roof structure, formed by metal trusses with rounded joints. The inclusion of a cultural use allows reconfiguring the entire interior to perceive a unitary volume, without substantially altering the exterior image of the building and maintaining the references with the rest of the complex.
The intended uses are: information point, exhibition area, audiovisual area, reading and computer rooms and sale of souvenirs related to the use, in addition to complementary uses such as administrative area, reception, toilets, storage or cleaning.
This project contemplates the rehabilitation of the “Cocheras Francesas” in the international station of Canfranc for its transformation into a “Cross-border Reception and Information Center of Way of St. James”, with the aim of responding to the needs of cross-border pilgrims, offering them a reception, attention and information center. The rehabilitation pursues to preserve the geometric and volumetric characteristics of the building, as well as its historical image – as far as possible -, without prejudice to the necessary interventions to restore its original character.
The projected action will be integrated into the surroundings respecting the industrial past of the entire area and substantially maintaining the volumetry and architectural composition of the original building.
For flood risk protection reasons, in compliance with the provisions of the partial plan, the ground level has been raised up to 110 cm above the existing level, by means of a platform that can be accessed both by ramp and stairs.
